In this video, Osho discusses the seven states (domains) of the human mind. He compares how Western and Eastern psychology view consciousness.  If we live consciously, with awareness and deeper knowledge, these higher domains of mind will become accessible to us. The objective of Hindu Dharma is to gradually expand the consciousness that we are into higher and higher domains, without getting stuck in customs and ācāras.

Osho explains that Western psychology began by studying mentally ill people. Because of this, Western scientists focused only on the lower parts of the mind. They want to bring sick people back to a normal state.

In contrast, Eastern psychology focuses on meditators. Eastern seekers want to go beyond normal consciousness to reach healthier states. Osho outlines seven total layers of the mind. The ordinary conscious mind sits right in the middle of these layers. There are three layers descending into the dark parts of the mind, and three layers ascending into spiritual states.

The table below shows Osho’s seven layers of the mind, ordered from the highest to the lowest.

It is we who decide and choose which of these seven domains we need to attain. We can do this only when we are with a body, as we are right now.
